In an August 19, 2026, article posted on Amazon News, Amazon says Prime Air will expand to nearly 500 U.S. cities and towns by the end of 2026, up from 11 current U.S. launch sites.
The Woodbury Warbler broke the news on August 21 that Mantua Township Mayor Robert Zimmerman said Mantua and Wenonah were slated to begin receiving drone deliveries in mid-October. Zimmerman said, “whether you are for, or against deliveries of this kind by drones, we have no say over this matter.”
Mantua Township Police Department separately shared on Facebook that offices of emergency management and police chiefs “across the area” had participated in a Zoom meeting with representatives from Amazon regarding the proposed drone delivery operation. According to Mantua Township Police Department, the drone launch facility will be located at 240 Mantua Grove Road in West Deptford Township. Amazon told officials that drone operations would run from 15 minutes before sunrise until 15 minutes after sunset, with drones authorized to operate below 400 feet. Drones will be making deliveries throughout “almost all” of Mantua Township and the Borough of Wenonah.

The Institute Has Questions About Amazon Prime Air Drone Delivery
Amazon says the service uses Amazon’s MK30 autonomous delivery drones to carry eligible packages weighing up to five pounds, with deliveries arriving in as little as 30 minutes. The drones use onboard cameras, sensors, and a Detect-and-Avoid system to navigate and avoid obstacles.
Amazon says the drones are fully electric, can fly in light rain, and are quieter than earlier models with flight noise comparable to a window fan on low and delivery noise below that of an idling delivery truck.
This case file examines how Prime Air works, what communities have experienced after launch, what authority federal and local governments retain, and what the public record does and does not tell us about Amazon’s Prime Air operation.
The Institute has contacted public officials and Amazon for comment. At the time of publication, the Institute has not received responses to its questions. This Case File is developing and will be updated as new information is obtained.
What is the MK30 Amazon Prime Air Drone?
The MK30 is Amazon Prime Air’s current-generation delivery drone, an electric unmanned aircraft designed to carry small packages from an Amazon drone delivery center to a customer’s property and then return to the same facility.
According to the FAA’s environmental review, the MK30 weighs about 77.9 pounds and has a maximum takeoff weight of 83.2 pounds, including a package weighing up to 5 pounds. In human terms, an MK30 at maximum takeoff weight weighs roughly as much as a large adult golden retriever flying through the air.

The aircraft has six propulsors and staggered tandem wings. It can take off and descend vertically like a multicopter, then transition into wing-borne flight for the trip to and from the customer. It runs on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.
Once airborne, the MK30 can travel at a maximum cruise speed of about 73 mph. Its maximum operating range is 7.5 miles from the Prime Air delivery center, which can produce a potential service area of about 174 square miles around a facility.

For most of the trip, the FAA document describes the aircraft flying approximately 180 to 377 feet above ground level, depending on the phase of flight. The aircraft remains below 400 feet.

The package rides inside the drone’s fuselage, rather than dangling underneath it. When the MK30 reaches the delivery address, it switches back into vertical flight and descends directly over the designated delivery point. It stops at approximately 13 feet above the ground, opens doors in the aircraft, and drops the package.
After releasing the package, it climbs vertically, transitions back into forward flight, and returns to the Prime Air delivery center. The FAA documents say it should touch the ground only at the delivery center, except during a contingency landing.
In practical terms, the MK30 is an approximately 80-pound autonomous aircraft traveling at highway speeds hundreds of feet overhead before descending to about 13 feet above a delivery point.

How Noisy Are Amazon Prime Air Drones?
Amazon says its MK30 delivery drone is quieter than previous models. The FAA’s environmental-review documents support that the MK30 tested quieter than Amazon’s earlier MK27-2 drone, but the answer to “how noisy is it?” is more complicated than a single decibel number.
In its 2024 Supplemental Environmental Assessment for Prime Air operations in College Station, Texas, the FAA noted that the MK30 was still under development and that final noise data were not yet available. To evaluate potential impacts, Amazon and the FAA conducted comparative noise testing of the MK30 and MK27-2. The testing found that the MK30 produced maximum sound levels that were equivalent to or lower than the MK27-2 during forward flight, and approximately 5 to 7 decibels lower during takeoff and landing. The MK30 also produced a lower Sound Exposure Level, or SEL, in all of the comparison tests.
Because final MK30 noise data were not yet available, the FAA used measurements from the louder MK27-2 as a conservative substitute in its 2024 College Station review. Later FAA analyses estimated an en-route SEL, of 63.7 dBA for a loaded MK30 at about 200 feet and 60.9 dBA for an empty return flight at roughly 345 feet.
SEL, is not the sound level someone would continuously hear while standing underneath the drone. The FAA defines SEL as a measure of the total acoustic energy produced during a single noise event, taking into account both the level of the sound and its duration, and mathematically representing that energy as though it occurred during a one-second period. SEL is useful for comparing individual aircraft-noise events of different durations, but an SEL of 64 dBA does not mean a drone is continuously producing 64 dBA of sound as it passes overhead.
The FAA evaluates cumulative aircraft noise using Day-Night Average Sound Level, or DNL, but federal environmental thresholds do not necessarily answer the question residents are asking: What will one of these things sound like over my house? The FAA itself acknowledges that noise below its threshold for a significant environmental impact can still be experienced by a community as a noise problem.
Regulatory significance and lived experience are not the same thing. Noise changes during different parts of delivery. Residents may experience a relatively brief overflight differently from a drone hovering or maneuvering close to the ground during delivery. Noise complaints have already become an issue in communities where Prime Air currently operates.
What Do Amazon Prime Air Drone Cameras See and Retain?
Amazon says Prime Air drones use onboard cameras and sensors for navigation, obstacle detection, and safe delivery. According to the company, the drones do not track individuals or record their movements, there is no live camera feed monitored by a person, and onboard camera data are processed by the aircraft for navigation. Amazon also says the MK30 combines GPS and vision-based navigation to fly Beyond Visual Line of Sight and complete deliveries autonomously.
Behind the aircraft, Prime Air uses Amazon Web Services to process large amounts of data, including LiDAR point clouds, aerial imagery, and geospatial information used to identify delivery locations and plan normal and contingency flight paths. Those systems also incorporate weather information and aircraft-traffic data from field weather stations and ADS-B receivers.
That broader data infrastructure does not establish which of those datasets are collected by MK30 drones during ordinary deliveries, how long flight-generated information is retained, or who can access it afterward.
Amazon’s own Prime Air job postings provide a clue about what happens to information generated during drone operations. A Prime Air Field Service Engineer is expected to use “direct operational data” to investigate system-performance anomalies, analyze drone behavior, and improve the system over time. Ground Handlers, meanwhile, are required to document and report operational activities using standardized tools.
Those postings establish that Prime Air retains and analyzes at least some operational information after flights occur. They do not explain what those datasets contain, whether they include camera or sensor imagery, how long the information is kept, or who can access it.
The FAA provides additional detail in its responses to public comments on a 2026 environmental assessment for Prime Air operations in Florida. The FAA says the MK30 does not capture imagery from underneath while it is in forward flight, and that its camera array is used for safe flight. During delivery, however, the drone descends to the customer’s property and hovers while cameras and sensors determine whether the delivery area is clear of obstacles and whether the package can be delivered safely. The FAA says the operator does not see the camera feed.

The FAA says the drones are not built or operated as surveillance drones and that they store only “critical mission data” used to improve systems and flight planning.
Neither Amazon’s public explanation nor the FAA material reviewed for this case file specifies the resolution or field of view of the cameras, exactly how many cameras are aboard the MK30, whether imagery is temporarily stored onboard, how long any camera or sensor data are retained, whether those data can be downloaded after a flight, or what information is preserved following an incident.
The FAA also makes clear that privacy itself is outside the agency’s regulatory mission. In its response to public comments, the FAA says it is not authorized to impose regulations based on privacy concerns. Prime Air must still comply with other applicable privacy laws, which are governed through a patchwork of laws, policies, and voluntary standards.
One of the clearest federal frameworks comes from the Voluntary Best Practices for UAS Privacy, Transparency, and Accountability, developed through a National Telecommunications and Information Administration multistakeholder process in 2016. Amazon was among the companies and organizations that supported the final best-practices document.
Those best practices recommend that a drone operator whose operations may collect identifiable information publish a privacy policy explaining, where practicable:
· why the drone collects data;
· what kinds of data it collects;
· its data-retention and de-identification practices;
· the types of entities with which the data may be shared;
· how people can submit privacy or security complaints; and
· how the operator responds to law-enforcement requests.
The guidance says operators should make a reasonable effort not to retain identifiable drone-collected data longer than reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was collected, although longer retention may be appropriate with consent or in exceptional circumstances such as a safety incident or legal dispute.
The same guidance distinguishes between collecting information and later using it. It recommends limits on how covered data are used and shared, particularly for sensitive decisions. That means the privacy question expands beyond whether a camera briefly sees a person, yard, vehicle, or neighboring property to include whether information generated during a flight is retained, combined with other information, reused for another purpose, or disclosed to someone else.
Compliance with these recommendations is voluntary.
Amazon’s general Privacy Notice covers broad categories of potentially relevant information, including location data, delivery information, images, video and technical data, but it does not specifically identify Prime Air or explain what the company has promised about drone-generated data. That detail is important because federal law creates an enforcement mechanism when a commercial drone operator violates its own privacy policy.
Federal law gives the FTC a role in policing commercial drone privacy promises. Section 375 of the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018 provides that a commercial drone operator’s violation of its privacy policy can constitute an unfair or deceptive practice under the Federal Trade Commission Act. Congress did not require operators to adopt privacy policies, but said they should maintain public policies addressing the collection, use, retention, sharing, and deletion of drone-collected data.
The FTC’s authority is not limited to formal privacy policies. The agency also polices deceptive privacy representations made on websites, in FAQs, promotional materials, user interfaces, and elsewhere. That means Amazon’s public statements about what Prime Air cameras do and do not do may matter even if those promises do not appear in its general privacy notice.
Unresolved Prime Air data and privacy questions include:
· What information does the MK30 generate during a flight?
· Which data does Amazon retain, and for how long?
· Are retained data de-identified?
· Can retained information be used to improve navigation or train automated systems?
· Is flight-generated information combined with other Amazon customer data?
· Who can access it after a flight or following an incident?
· Under what circumstances is it shared with contractors, law enforcement, or other third parties?
These questions are especially relevant because Amazon participated in the process that produced federal UAS privacy best practices recommending disclosure of data-collection, retention, and sharing practices, yet that information is not clearly presented in Amazon’s public-facing Prime Air materials.
The Institute has contacted Amazon for additional information about Prime Air’s data collection and retention practices and will update this case file as more information becomes available.
Do Property Owners Have Privacy or Air Rights Above Their Homes?
Property owners do not own an unlimited column of sky extending upward from their property. Federal law gives the United States exclusive sovereignty over U.S. airspace, and the FAA regulates how that airspace is used for aviation safety and efficiency. Aircraft, including drones operating under federal authority, generally have a right to travel through navigable airspace. U.S. Code, 49 U.S.C. § 40103
That said, property rights do not end at the roofline.
The Supreme Court’s 1946 decision in United States v. Causby remains the foundational case on property rights in low-altitude airspace. Courts have rejected the idea that landowners own the sky indefinitely, and ordinary navigable airspace is generally treated as public. But Causby also recognized that aircraft operating in the “immediate reaches” above private property can interfere with property rights when flights are sufficiently low, frequent and disruptive.
A 2026 federal case in Maine applying Causby illustrates that distinction. The court noted that constitutional takings claims based on aircraft noise or vibration are generally rejected when flights occur in ordinary navigable airspace, typically above 500 feet. At lower altitudes, however, repeated overflights can become relevant when they substantially interfere with the actual use and enjoyment of the property. A takings claim, in this context, is an argument that government-authorized aircraft operations have burdened private property so substantially that the government has effectively taken an easement and owes compensation. Elisens v. Maine Instrument Flight, et al., U.S.D.C. District of Maine, Civil Action No. 25-cv-627-LEW (February 20, 2026).
This does not mean a private drone operator such as Amazon would automatically face a constitutional takings claim. The Maine case involved different facts and different parties. Its relevance here is narrower: courts continue to recognize a legal distinction between ordinary aircraft passing through navigable airspace and repeated operations in the lowest reaches above private property.
This distinction matters for Prime Air because the MK30 operates below 400 feet and may descend to roughly 13 feet above a delivery point. Whether a particular drone operation implicates property rights would depend on the facts, including altitude, frequency, duration, noise, and the extent to which the operation interferes with the owner’s use and enjoyment of the property.
The FAA’s current guidance on state and local drone regulation reflects that distinction. States and municipalities generally cannot use local law to effectively prohibit drones from traveling through federally regulated airspace.
For Prime Air, that leaves two separate questions: Where may Amazon legally fly its drones, and what may Amazon lawfully see, collect, retain, or use while doing so?
What Say Do Local Governments and the Public Have?
Mantua Township Mayor Robert Zimmerman told residents that whether they support or oppose Amazon Prime Air drone delivery, “we have no say over this matter.”
That may be true in a narrow sense. The FAA controls the national airspace system, and state or local rules that effectively amount to a townwide ban on drone flight are likely to be preempted.
But that does not mean state and local governments have no authority over Prime Air operations.
The FAA expressly says privacy is outside its regulatory mission, so FAA authorization to fly does not by itself determine what a drone operator may lawfully photograph, record, retain or analyze. Other federal, state and local laws concerning privacy, trespass, harassment, surveillance and data practices may still apply.
The FAA also says state and local governments may regulate where drones take off and land, where operators are physically located, and activity in the “immediate reaches” of private property when drone operations substantially interfere with an owner’s use and enjoyment of the land. Generally applicable laws involving privacy, voyeurism, harassment, trespass, reckless endangerment, land use and zoning are also less likely to be preempted when they do not effectively prevent reasonable use of the airspace.
Privacy restrictions may be permissible when narrowly tailored. The FAA gives the example of limits on low-altitude drone operations over places where people reasonably expect privacy, such as parks or schools, while still allowing aircraft to pass overhead at higher altitudes.
The distinction is essentially between regulating the airspace itself and regulating ground activity, land use, conduct, privacy and other matters traditionally handled by state and local government. A municipality generally cannot declare that no drones may fly over town. Depending on the circumstances, however, it may retain authority over the location and operation of a launch facility, takeoff and landing activity, zoning and land-use approvals, certain low-altitude intrusions on private property, and privacy or safety concerns.
Federal voluntary privacy best practices separately recommend that drone operators minimize unnecessary collection of identifiable information, avoid persistent surveillance without an appropriate reason or consent, and explain their collection, retention and sharing practices. Those recommendations are voluntary, not a general federal drone-privacy code.
The public also has a role. The FAA’s Community Involvement Manual says communities affected by aviation proposals should have opportunities to be informed, raise concerns, provide information and understand how those concerns are being considered. The manual specifically identifies Unmanned Aircraft Systems as a category of FAA action that can generate significant community interest.
The FAA says community involvement should begin early and should be a two-way process. It recommends explaining the project, the decisions being made, the roles of the FAA and project sponsor, the timeline, environmental review, opportunities to participate and how public input will be considered. The agency also warns that communities denied information or meaningful involvement early in a project may lose trust and turn to media or political channels to raise concerns.

To date, the Institute has not identified any FAA-led community-involvement effort or public notice specific to the proposed West Deptford operation. The public information identified so far consists of two social media announcements from Mantua Township officials.
The more precise question is not whether local officials can veto Amazon’s use of federally regulated airspace. They generally cannot. The question instead is what authority local governments retained over the West Deptford facility and related ground operations, what approvals or conditions were available to them, what public-engagement process occurred, and what opportunities residents had to weigh in on the parts of the project still subject to local or federal review.
Where Will Amazon Prime Air Delivery Drones Fly?

FAA environmental-review documents describe Prime Air as operating within a defined geographic area around each Prime Air Drone Delivery Center, or PADDC. The MK30 has a maximum operating range of 7.5 miles, creating a potential service area of approximately 174 to 175 square miles around each delivery center.
However, that does not mean every address inside that circle is necessarily eligible for drone delivery. Amazon says coverage can vary within listed ZIP codes, and customers at eligible addresses are shown the drone-delivery option during shopping and checkout.
Within an operating area, FAA documents say the MK30 follows a predefined route from the delivery center to the delivery site. The route is tied to the location of the delivery. The Omaha environmental assessment says arrival and departure paths from the drone delivery center would generally correspond to the geographic location of the customer’s delivery address.
In other words, Prime Air is not describing a network of fixed aerial streets that every drone follows regardless of destination.
A 7.5-mile operating radius can encompass a mixture of residential, commercial, recreational, and public land. FAA environmental reviews therefore examine the entire proposed operating area rather than only the Amazon facility or the homes receiving packages.
The FAA documents also show that Prime Air can adjust operations when necessary to avoid or minimize negative impacts. The public materials reviewed for this case file do not provide a street-by-street map of every route an MK30 might take during routine deliveries.
So the answer to “Will one fly over my house?” is more complicated than drawing a 7.5-mile circle on a map. Being inside a Prime Air operating area means drone operations may occur in the surrounding airspace, but actual flight paths depend on eligible delivery locations, planned trajectories, operational restrictions, weather, airspace conditions, and other factors.
Are Environmental Reviews Required to Operate Delivery Drones?
In July 2026, the FAA finalized a national Programmatic Environmental Assessment, or PEA, for commercial drone package delivery operations conducted under Part 135. The FAA then issued a Finding of No Significant Impact and Record of Decision on July 28, 2026.
That does not mean the FAA determined that drone delivery will have no environmental effects anywhere in the United States. A programmatic review evaluates a category of activities at a broad level. The FAA can rely on that national analysis for later authorization requests when the environmental effects of a proposed operation have already been adequately addressed. When a drone operator seeks FAA authorization for a new delivery area, the FAA reviews the proposed operation as part of that process and determines whether the national PEA adequately covers its environmental impacts or whether additional site-specific NEPA review is required.
This is important because potential effects of drone delivery are inherently local. Noise exposure depends on where flight paths are concentrated. Wildlife impacts depend on which species and habitats are beneath an operating area. Historic resources, parks, schools and other noise-sensitive places vary from one community to another. Even wildfire risk can depend on local vegetation and land cover.
Earlier Prime Air reviews show how specific that analysis can become. In a 2026 Draft Environmental Assessment for proposed operations in the Detroit area, the FAA examined wildlife, parks, historic and cultural resources, aircraft noise, visual effects and emergency landings.
How Many Amazon Drones Will Take Flight in Prime Air Delivery Areas?
Amazon has proposed operating up to 1,000 MK30 delivery flights per day from individual Prime Air delivery centers, although actual flight volume varies with customer demand and weather. That does not mean 1,000 drones would be in the air at once. Public FAA documents reviewed by the Institute do not specify how many individual aircraft would be based at each delivery center or the maximum number that could operate simultaneously.
What Have Communities That Already Have Prime Air Learned?
Communities that already have Amazon Prime Air are learning that public conversation changes quickly once the drones move from a press release into the sky.
The most consistent complaints involve noise and frequency.
In Richardson, Texas, residents began raising concerns within months of Prime Air launching there. Some told local officials that drones were passing over their neighborhoods repeatedly throughout the day and could be heard from inside their homes. The city received dozens of complaints about noise, flight frequency, and how low the drones appeared to be flying. “You can hear them in your home,” one resident said. “It feels like an air raid.”
The distribution of flights can matter as much as the total number operating within a delivery area. In Richardson, a resident said, “We have data to support that on a single day, 122 drones were logged flying directly over my home in a 10-hour period, which feels like an excessive amount,” Puri said. “That’s about every five minutes.”
That experience illustrates something a service-area map cannot show: drone traffic may not be distributed evenly across a community. Airspace restrictions, delivery demand, and flight routing can concentrate repeated overflights above particular homes or neighborhoods.
Richardson city officials responded to resident complaints by asking Amazon to conduct additional noise analysis, consider alternative flight routes, and strengthen privacy protections. The complaints were tied in part to the way drone traffic was being concentrated over particular neighborhoods. Reporting by the Dallas Observer found that a nearby hospital created a no-fly area that pushed a large share of Prime Air traffic over one neighborhood, where residents were experiencing repeated overflights rather than occasional deliveries.
Amazon later made operational changes in Richardson after residents complained about noise and frequency, telling the city council that the company had begun making adjustments while acknowledging that there was “more work to do.”
Similar complaints emerged in Michigan.
Ferndale officials began examining what options were available after receiving resident complaints about Prime Air drone noise from nearby Amazon operations. Axios reported that some residents were disturbed by repeated overflights while the city confronted an important limitation: federal aviation law leaves municipalities with relatively little authority to regulate the aircraft themselves.
In nearby Auburn Hills, city officials said residents had also raised concerns about noise, frequency, and privacy. Mayor Eugene Hawkins III told CBS Detroit that residents were reporting roughly eight to 10 drones passing over some homes each day. The city publicly acknowledged the complaints:
"The post is to mainly let the residents know that we hear you. We hear your complaints about the drones," said Auburn Hills Mayor Eugene Hawkins III.
The mayor says the noise, frequency, and privacy are the top frustrations.
"There's always at least 8 to 10 drones going over houses per day, so they're kind of concerned about that. It's a constant buzzing sound once the drones are going over your home. Privacy issues are a big concern with the residents. They don't want to be filmed or surveilled by the drone system and Amazon," Hawkins said.
Some people who have used Prime Air describe the speed and convenience positively. In Richardson, one customer told Spectrum News that he liked receiving his package in less than 30 minutes while also understanding why neighbors objected to the repeated noise.
Real-world operations have also produced less predictable problems.
“I was inside the house and I heard it,” Lindsey Austen said on Thursday. “I was like, 'Is the second coming of Jesus happening?'" The customer said she had not specifically selected drone delivery for that order. Amazon said delivery mishaps are rare and pointed to its customer guarantee for failed deliveries.
Across these communities, another recurring issue is communication before launch. Some residents have said they did not fully understand the scale, routes, frequency, or noise associated with Prime Air until drones began flying overhead. As reported by the Spokesman-Review in Spokane, Oregon:
Lauren Guastella [said]…drones might even drive her to leave her home in Ferndale: “In the beginning, I saw maybe one every few days, and I was like, ‘OK, this is super weird, but whatever.’ Now it is constant. Whether I am inside my house or outside in my garden, I can hear them. It sounds like an incredibly loud beehive attack. When you go outside, you just want peace. Frankly, it makes me want to move out of Ferndale.”
The feedback was not all negative, though:
“I’ve noticed a huge cutback on traffic in our street. I have two small children, so less delivery trucks up and down the streets has been a lifesaver because my kids like to play outside,” Van Assche said. “I’ve never had a package damaged during delivery. I’ve had more damaged from hand delivery. The drones deliver them right to my porch. I think it’s great. I think postal services should take notes.”
Amazon maintains that community response to Prime Air has been overwhelmingly positive and says drone noise is comparable to common neighborhood sounds. The company also says fewer than 1% of Prime Air customer-service inquiries it received this year concerned noise. Those figures measure customer inquiries to Amazon, however, and do not necessarily capture complaints submitted to municipalities, the FAA, or voiced publicly by people who are not Prime Air customers.
What Happens When Something Goes Wrong With an Amazon Prime Air Drone?
Amazon Prime Air drones are designed to respond to problems in flight by either continuing safely on a contingency route or putting themselves on the ground.
Amazon calls one of those procedures a Safe Contingent Landing. According to the company, an MK30 can initiate a controlled landing when it encounters conditions such as sudden high winds, loss of a cell tower connection, unexpected emergency aircraft traffic, or multiple failures in redundant systems. The drone transitions from forward flight to vertical flight, uses its onboard perception system to evaluate the area below, and selects a place to land. Amazon says Prime Air drones normally operate between about 115 and 400 feet above the ground.
If the aircraft comes down somewhere other than its delivery center, Amazon says a recovery team is sent to its exact location. If the drone lands in a backyard or other inaccessible location, the company says it contacts the property owner for access and may coordinate with local authorities. The aircraft is then returned to the Prime Air facility and inspected before it can fly again.
A controlled emergency landing is not the only thing that can go wrong.
In October 2025, as reported by Reuters, two Amazon Prime Air drones crashed after colliding with the boom of a construction crane in Tolleson, Arizona. Amazon temporarily suspended deliveries from the facility while the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board began investigating. The company subsequently said its internal review found no problem with the drone technology and added enhanced visual inspections intended to identify obstacles such as cranes before flights resumed.
FAA environmental reviews also contemplate the possibility of a more serious consequence: fire after a crash.
In its environmental analysis for Prime Air operations in Arizona, the FAA explicitly acknowledged that a drone crash could occur and could start a wildfire. The agency said Prime Air would use aircraft-system data to locate an off-nominal drone, follow its Safety Management System Incident Response Process, and coordinate with local first responders when necessary. Amazon told the FAA that local emergency fire services would be notified immediately following a crash. The FAA concluded that the wildfire risk to biological resources was low in that operating area because emergency responders were expected to control a fire before it produced significant effects.
Those procedures raise another practical question for communities preparing for Prime Air operations: what have local police, fire departments and emergency-management officials been told to do when an 83-pound autonomous aircraft comes down somewhere it was not supposed to?
FAA environmental-review documents state that Prime Air would use its Incident Response Process to coordinate with local first responders as required and would immediately notify local emergency fire services following a crash. They do not, by themselves, answer whether every local department beneath a proposed flight area has received advance training, response protocols, contact information, or guidance about hazards associated with recovering a damaged aircraft.
Why Is It So Difficult to Ask Amazon Questions About Prime Air?
I first tried contacting Amazon with questions about the Prime Air rollout in my coverage area using the two addresses that appeared most relevant: [email protected] for media inquiries and [email protected] for Prime Air questions.
The Prime Air address returned an automated response saying the inbox was no longer monitored.

I called the phone number provided in the email and was unable to reach a human.
I followed the instructions to Amazon customer support.

Also no luck.

The Ask AWS chatbot on Amazon’s Prime Air Drone Delivery page declined to answer questions about Prime Air data collection, storage, and sharing, instead directing the inquiry to Amazon privacy pages or customer service.
Finally, I requested a phone call.

Someone called almost immediately.
The representative told me there was “no customer support for technical questions” and “no media contact” for Prime Air. She offered to open a support ticket that she said would go “directly to the drone delivery management team.” She said she did so, but was unable to provide a ticket number because she said she would not see that information until after the ticket had been generated.
I received an email after the call thanking me for contacting Amazon. It was sent to the email address associated with my personal Amazon account, which I had not provided to the customer service representative.

At the time of publication, I have received no further communication from Amazon regarding the support ticket the representative said she opened, nor has Amazon responded to my media inquiry.
For a service Amazon says it plans to expand to nearly 500 U.S. cities and towns by the end of 2026, finding a human being who can answer basic questions about how Prime Air operates has been considerably more difficult than finding the drones.
This lack of a clear contact point is notable because the FAA’s own guidance places responsibility on drone operators to engage with affected communities. The FAA says drone package-delivery operators are required to inform local communities of their operations and respond to public inquiries about those operations. The agency also says community engagement by operators may occur alongside the FAA’s own public-involvement process under NEPA.
Amazon also participated in the federal multistakeholder process that produced the 2016 Voluntary Best Practices for UAS Privacy, Transparency, and Accountability. Amazon was among the stakeholders supporting the final document, which encourages drone operators to inform affected people about UAS use and data collection, explain privacy practices, provide ways to submit privacy or security concerns, and promote transparency and accountability around commercial drone operations.
Against that backdrop, the inability, both as an affected community member and as a member of the press, to identify a functioning Prime Air contact for basic questions about a proposed local operation raises a straightforward question: how does Amazon intend to meet the community-engagement, public-inquiry, and communication responsibilities the FAA says accompany commercial drone delivery?
